TIMES JEMBER, JAKARTA – In the heart of Magelang Regency, Centra Java, Indonesia, resides an extraordinary automobile that captivates all who lay eyes upon it – a vintage Volkswagen (VW) Safari, custom-made in Germany in 1976, adorned with a stunning teak wood body.

Though it may appear to be a toy car or an exquisite ornament, this unique vehicle is fully functional, ready to be driven and enjoyed like any other automobile. What sets it apart is the choice of material used for its construction – high-quality teak wood, aged for hundreds of years.

The remarkable craftsmanship behind this masterpiece was executed in the artisan town of Jepara, with the process taking nearly a year to complete. Back in 2007, a close friend of the owner, an experienced teak wood entrepreneur, spearheaded the construction.

First, the original car body was removed, and a sturdy framework was meticulously crafted to serve as the support structure for the teak wood body. This framework not only ensures the stability of the wooden body but also provides protection during the installation process.

The teak wood components were meticulously bonded together using wood glue. To maintain the longevity of the adhesive, the car must avoid prolonged exposure to direct sunlight and excessive amounts of water.

Every replaceable part was swapped with elegant teak wood, including the seats, side mirrors, and the frame surrounding the front windshield. The craftsmanship showcased an extraordinary level of attention to detail, making the vehicle a true work of art on wheels.

The care and maintenance for this teak-covered VW differ only slightly from conventional cars. Routine checks for the suspension, engine oil, and brakes are essential, ensuring the vehicle's smooth performance and longevity.

Satrio's profound love for classic cars, particularly VW models, led him to invest substantial resources in acquiring this remarkable automobile. However, his passion extends beyond the teak-covered VW Safari. He also cherishes two other classic VW models – the VW Combi and VW Beetle, both adding to the allure of his collection.
